Watch this video to learn about the importance of materials and their properties when designing.
After you have watched this video- complete the fourth column of your materials and properties worksheet. You may need to research the properties of some of the materials if you are unsure.
Do a Google search of the material name to get started.

Step 1:Draw the flooring you will use on your playground. You will need to label this clearly, and write one sentence explaining why you chose to use the material you did. You can hand draw or use Microsoft paint.
Write or type your sentences- this will be added to your manila folder
Watch the Rubber Cal's video to get your mind thinking about safe flooring options for your playground

Are the materials safe and suitable?
Materials and their properties are very important. There are many factors we need to consider. How will you minimise people hurting themselves on the playground equipment? Is there a better option then bark? Some children might be allergic, they won't be able to play if there is bark on the ground. |
Step 2Sun safety is important, what will you design to provide enough shade for students who are using the playground.
- Sun shades? - Plant more trees? -Umbrellas? Draw and clearly label the sun safety protection you will use on your playground. Write an sentence explaining your choice. You can hand draw or use Microsoft paint. Step 3It is time to design the four of your best resource/equipment ideas from lesson last lesson. Before you design them, you need to be write two sentences explaining:
1. How does this resource/equipment require physical activity or reflect an aspect of wellbeing? 2. How does it respond to the wants and the needs of the students you surveyed. |
Step 4Decide on the materials that will be most suitable for the design of your playground equipment and resources. Add this information to your materials justification- print and add to your manila folder. Reflect on the materials used in our schools playground.
Think about how the resource will work, and whether the materials properties will ensure it works properly and safely? Would you use glass for a slide? Or wood for monkey bars? NO! You now need to complete your design plan. Add and clearly label your four chosen resources/equipment to your design plan. Name the equipment you have designed and label the different materials that will be used. You should have 3 completed tasks to add to your manila folder 1- drawn and labeled diagram plan 2- Written explanation of your choices (4 sentences) 3- Material justification worksheet |
